Things to do and see in Ballina  (Page 2 of 3)

Pioneer Memorial Park
Located immediately over Missingham Bridge from Ballina. The Ballina cemetry was originally established here due to to the high ground. The first recorded burial in old East Ballina cemetery is that of Pearson Simpson on 26th May, 1853. In 1915 graves were transferred to the new Ballina cemetery. It was not until 1963 that this Pioneer Park was established under a special act of Parliament. The old headstones being used to create a historic walk. Owing to the large number of shipping disasters, many sea captains and crew were buried within this cemetery - a grim reminder of Australia's historic past.

In the 1950s (after there had been no new burials since 1915) it was decided to build a wall containing all the historic headstones.

Rotary Lookout
The major novelty value is trying to read a bronze map with directions (the usual trick for lookouts). There have been walls constructed with PVC piping which, if you look through the piping you see the particular coastal feature which is the novel educational appeal.

The Ballina Lighthouse must be one of the smallest lighthouses on the Australian coast. First established in 1866 it turned automatic in 1926 and is located in a park near the water. It was built to a design by the prominent Colonial Architect, James Barnet.

Although other tower lenses in Australia have been changed to plastic, the Ballina tower is still operating with it’s original Chance Bros. lens.
